40th Anniversary Celebrated
A Tribute to Chaplain John Jamison by Max Soft
In 1969, a young man graduated from forestry school at Colorado State University, and was immediately given an ultimatum by the federal government: get a job or go to jail. At that time, the United States was embroiled in the Vietnam War, and forestry students made great soldiers because of their knowledge of the outdoors and their love of hiking. However, this young man’s pacifistic Quaker background did not allow him to take up arms, hence the US government’s mandate. Since he obviously didn’t want to go to jail, he quickly found a job running the wilderness program for the Yellowstone Boys Ranch. For weeks during the summer he would lead boys into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, camp with them, and teach them about their surroundings.
He recalls one such trip as one of his two fondest memories at YBGR. As he camped next to the Big Salmon Lake in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, he looked across the water at the majestic mountains and beautiful forest, and said to himself, “I am the most fortunate man in the country. I am not dodging bullets, rather I am helping kids and showing them the majesty of God’s incredible creation.”
Incredibly, John Jamison’s first job out of college has also been his last, as he has blessed Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch with his commitment to helping kids for 40 years! I hope that as you see Pastor Jamison on campus, you will congratulate him on his 4 decades of dedicated service, and I would also hope that you would share his attitude that committed service is truly a blessing. And as is true with Pastor J, the Ranch really is fortunate to have dedicated staff committed to helping dysfunctional families and hurting children. We may not ever make the cover of Forbes magazine, enjoy a huge bank account, obtain notoriety and fame, or drive a Ferrari, but we have been blessed with a job that really makes an immediate and eternal difference. Thank you Pastor J, for your incredible dedication and service, and thank you YBGR staff (every one of you), for your committed service to making a difference in the lives of troubled youth.

Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch - TOP TEN of Yellowstone County
Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch is recognized in the latest publication by the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. The Ranch is featured in the "Top 10 Private Employers in Yellowstone County".
In 1957, Franklin Robbie visited a correctional school, and that visit forever changed his life. Determined to help the forgotten boys and give them another option, Robbie along with Carl Orth and Bob McFarlane, raised money to purchase property that would be home to the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch. Now what was originally a dairy farm stands a nationally recognized facility that helps youth with behavioral and mental health issues. “I think that the community here is very supportive of the ranch and our mission to help children and families”, says ranch spokeswoman Andrea Kenney.
At any given time the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch, helps 750 kids through its programs.
